UPDATE (9:48pm EST): James Mirtle from The Globe and Mail writes “Local RCMP told The Globe and Mail on Monday night that the death was not suspicious.”
Rypien battled depression off the NHL ice and “his leave of absence last November was the second he took as a member of the team in the past three seasons.”
UPDATE (9:51pm EST): News1130 in Vancouver also reported on Monday night that the cause of Rypien’s death was suicide.
UPDATE – Statement from the Winnipeg Jets (10:38pm EST): “We are deeply saddened to confirm Rick’s passing. As many people are aware, he had strong ties to True North Sports & Entertainment, the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club, the former Manitoba Moose Hockey Club and the Vancouver Canucks. We would like to express our sincere sympathies to the Rypien family as well as Rick’s friends. We also appreciate all of the support that has come pouring in from Rick’s fans. Rick was a talented player with an extremely bright future. His hunger for the game made him a valued team member both on and off the ice. This loss has impacted us as more than just a hockey team.”
… a real shame. Only a few months after the death of Derek Boogaard at the young age of 28 the National Hockey League and it’s fans lose yet another young player. Rypien was only 27 years old.
Rypien was currently playing for the Winnipeg Jets but was recently a part of the Vancouver Canucks organization.
Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to Rypien’s family, friends and organization during this tragic time.
