Blog: The Allure of Game 7

As the Rangers roll into their second game 7 of this post season, many fans experience a myriad of emotions. I see many fans prepping for their impending heart attacks, anxiety attacks, possible bowel and stomach issues, etc.  While you may be stocking up on Tums and Maalox, rest assured that the Rangers game 7 record is quite dandy.

The Rangers, in their storied franchise, have only had 9 game 7’s.  Hard to believe, but it’s true.  Their record of 4 wins-5 losses isn’t too shabby, considering those 4 wins were on MSG ice as well as being the most recently played game 7s.  The 5 losses, you ask?  Well they were on the opposing team’s home ice.

The four most recent wins in game 7 should be easily remembered by most fans.  The first one was game7 in1992 against the Devils.  The Rangers won handedly against the Devils, 8-4.  The next two game 7’s on home ice were courtesy of the 1994 postseason, a season most long-term fans remember fondly.  First game 7 of 1994 was Matteau’s exciting double overtime game winner against the Devils.  The echoes of ‘MATTEAU MATTEAU MATTEAU!!!’ still ring through almost any fans head that witnessed that magical moment.  Then there was the ‘original’ captain’s, Mark Messier, Stanley Cup Finala goal, putting the Rangers up 3-2 ingame 7 againstVancouver.  And finally, most recently, the Rangers game 7 win against the Senators a few weeks ago.

The Rangers have history working in their favour.  Hopefully they feed off of the energy in MSG and add another game 7 win on home ice.
